ON LINE SELF-STUDY COURSE
BOWEN FAMILY SYSTEMS THEORY (BFST)

Course Overview
Course Description:
This online course will facilitate the study and application of Bowen Family Systems Theory, (BFST) a particular way of understanding human behavior and relationships. While it is meant primarily for those who cannot access direct course involvement, we recognize that there may be students who feel that learning is enhanced by using this modality. No prior knowledge of Bowen theory is required. Neither is it necessary to have any other formal training in the helping professions or education as a pre-requisite. The course is open to anyone who wants to take it.

The curriculum is structured in a self-study format that the student may begin once an application is submitted and accepted. The student has six months to complete ten (10) modules covering basic concepts. Each module will contain introductory material intended to acquaint the student with the main ideas presented in the module. This will be followed by a series of questions designed to help the student explore the content. The student will read and analyze material on his/her own and answer the questions. There are four basic texts for the course. Responses will be e-mailed to the WPFC faculty member assigned to the student once accepted into the course and will serve as the basis for interaction between student and faculty, on line and in real time. The course is designed to meet the student at his/her level of understanding and to support exploration of the material in ways which make sense to the student. Movement to the next module takes place when the faculty member working with the student determines that the student has a basic level of understanding of the core concepts presented in the module.

The modules build on each other. Developing a basic understanding of the theory requires completion of all modules. The student is not permitted to sign up for selected modules from the list of eleven. It is to be expected that the first modules may seem abstract or hard to understand; this is because these modules are geared to orienting the student to making a paradigmatic shift.

WPFC recognizes this modality is new and in many ways untested. For this reason there is an on-going dialogue about the viability of learning theory through this medium. Where possible, there will be in-person or voice contact between faculty and the student at three points during the course. These include after the application has been filled out, at mid-point in the self study and at the completion of the course. These contacts are in addition to scheduled faculty/student content discussions and are designed to address any issues that arise. The student may get in touch with the assigned faculty member at any time with questions or concerns and is not limited to these built-in points of contact. It is the goal of WPFC to track this modality (1) as a vehicle for the dissemination of the theory, and (2) an ongoing evaluation of the issues that arise having to do with using this modality.
