Description:
Learning Bowen theory is much more than an intellectual exercise. A person does not learn it by reading the literature or taking a course, although these activities are important. People learn it primarily through their efforts to live it in their personal and professional lives. It takes time. Those who learn it best recognize their limitations and continue to plug away at applying systems thinking to emotionally difficult situations. It helps to "bump up" against people who have a little more understanding and experience with the ideas than one's own. That is the primary purpose of this lecture series. Dr. Kerr does his best to (1) represent Bowen theory accurately and in new ways, (2)illustrate the process of differentiation with videotaped interviews of people dealing with a wide range of life's problems, and (3) show how the theory and its applications are being extended into new areas. It is more difficult to learn and maintain a systems orientation in a society that is regressing. This is because blaming others, polarization, and a quick-fix orientation characterize emotional regression at the family and societal levels. In the best of all worlds, this lecture series will help people calibrate their "systems" compass in the midst of the powerful emotional forces that swirl around us.
Eligibility:
Open to the public. Some knowledge of Bowen theory is helpful.
