56. Ed Friedman: Process Theology and the Process of Life
(c) Western PA Family Center
Program: Training program for clergy
Subject: Training for clergy coping with systems.
Author: Ed Friedman

Description: Dr. Friedman begins by presenting a vignette about robots and and difficulties in coping with ambiguity in robotic speech. In humans some genes function differently depending on the other genes. Is there something specifically different in humans? He suggests that a newly installed pastor first become part of the system, forming relationships, observing triangles and then take a stand that will disturb the system to bring out reactivity. Then the job is not to be reactive to the reactivity.

57. Ed Friedman: A Conversation (Monday afternoon and evening), Tape 2
(c) Western PA Family Center, 1991
Program:
Subject: Specific ways in which Bowen impacted Friedman’s thinking.
Author: Ed Friedman shortly after Bowen’s death in 1991

Description: Dr. Friedman discusses which of Bowen’s ideas have had most impact him as well as those with which he had difficulty. He reviews the issue of symptom relief as opposed to Bowen’s interest in the evolution of the species. Symptoms are in the way of evolution. Problems are opportunities for the evolution of the species. The age at which one is introduced to systems ideas also influences the understandings and experiences one brings to these ideas and the ability to accept the theory. An emotional shift has to occur. Otherwise the emotional system will override the ideas. Thinking must be in the service of differentiation. The human relationship is described as the most powerful force on earth.

58. Ed Friedman: A Conversation plus Two Case Studies
(c) Western PA Family Center.
Program: Guest Lecture Series - Clergy training
Subject: Presentation for clergy training
Author: Edwin H. Friedman 1991 or 1992

Description: Dr. Friedman discusses the need to apply thinking to cope with reactivity. Reactivity becomes part of the problem especially for caregivers when they are under pressure to come up with the right answer. More helpful is to frame a situation as one in which the caregiver assists the person to get as objective as possible about one’s own life and present therapy as “a non-anxious place to think and ask challenging questions”. Presenting ideas in stories is often helpful. The case studies illustrate his understanding of helpfulness.

60. Emotional Process in Society
© Georgetown Family Center, 1981.
Program: Georgetown Collection
Subject: Social regression, Emotional process in society
Author: Bowen, Murray 1981

Description: This videotape examines the logical conceptual bridge from the emotional processes in families to those in society. The link came from a study of families with delinquent children. From the study, ideas about emotional reactivity are applied to conceptualizations about transgressions against society. The factors that can increase societal anxiety and changes in attitudes and methods of dealing with problems are noted. One hypothesis expressed in the tape is that, similar to family process, societal regression can be dealt with when leaders are calm and can observe the overall system.
