20. Cancer and Emotional Systems, Tape 1
© Princeton Family Center, 1994.
Program: 1994 Princeton Family Center Annual Conference
Subject:
Author: LaShan, Lawrence; Kerr, Michael 02/04/94
Description: Bowen Family Systems Theory holds that cancer is a manifestation of emotional forces operating in the family. These emotional forces are assumed to be a product of the human evolutionary heritage and are the basis for the family's functioning as a system. An understanding of the emotional system can help explain the onset and clinical course of cancer. The emotional system includes a multitude of functionally interdependent variables that range from genes to interpersonal relationships, with cancer reflecting a disturbance in the balance among all the variables rather than any one variable being its "cause". This conceptualization of cancer has important treatment implications.
