Description: Leadership moving into the future is in the news today more than ever – in government, business and the family, just to name a few. Questions abound: How do families, organizations, and nations determine a direction for the future? How is leadership defined? What characteristics of leaders and followers facilitate a better adaptation to change and the fulfillment of important goals? How do leaders and followers shape one anothers behavior? Are there leaders without followers? Are there followers without leaders? How is succession of leadership determined in a thoughtful way? Bowen Family Systems Theory shines a distinct light on these and many other related questions. |
Eligibility: Open to the public.

Description: This conference will include two videotaped clinical
interviews with people who have been involved in Bowen theory based
therapy for less than a year. One person had been in psychoanalysis
for several years and reflects on the contrast between the theories
and the therapies. The interview also illustrates the therapist's
efforts to introduce systems ideas to someone well-schooled in
individual theory. The other person had also been in psychodynamic
psychotherapy for several years, but it foundered on transference-countertransference issues. The experience motivated her
to seek out a new type of therapy (she chose the Bowen Center after
reading its website), a decision that proved a refreshing change. The
day will begin with a lecture on differentiation of self, examining
the concept/process from an evolutionary perspective.
(Originally scheduled for 2/13/2010 this event has been moved to 3/13/2010.)

Description: Learning Bowen theory is much more than an intellectual exercise. A person does not learn it by reading the literature or taking a course, although these activities are important. People learn it primarily through their efforts to live it in their personal and professional lives. It takes time. Those who learn it best recognize their limitations and continue to plug away at applying systems thinking to emotionally difficult situations. It helps to "bump up" against people who have a little more understanding and experience with the ideas than one's own. That is the primary purpose of this lecture series. Dr. Kerr does his best to (1) represent Bowen theory accurately and in new ways, (2)illustrate the process of differentiation with videotaped interviews of people dealing with a wide range of life's problems, and (3) show how the theory and its applications are being extended into new areas. It is more difficult to learn and maintain a systems orientation in a society that is regressing. This is because blaming others, polarization, and a quick-fix orientation characterize emotional regression at the family and societal levels. In the best of all worlds, this lecture series will help people calibrate their "systems" compass in the midst of the powerful emotional forces that swirl around us. |
Eligibility: Open to the public. Some knowledge of Bowen theory is helpful. |

Description: This presentation will focus on the past six year study of specific areas in Africa. An overview will be described beginning with an attempt to analyze the anatomy of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, utilizing concepts from Bowen theory. The last three years has emphasized the societal emotional and relationship processes associated with leadership transition, celebration and struggle in South Africa. Questions and issues pertaining to the study of societal processes will be discussed including the goal of aiming at a target of emotional neutrality. An attempt will be made to theoretically contextualize this study of Africa as an intense version of generalized societal anxiety, reactivity and leadership uncertainty. The relatively brief period of cultural evolution associated with human beings living in large societies will be highlighted as one source of this anxiety. |
