What the program is about?

The Cultural Competency workshop provides participants with both concepts related to culture and tools to use to apply culturally relevant information to workplace issues. Through fostering a lively dialogue, the workshop facilitator enables participants identify and recognize elements of culture. Participants learn to adopt effective cultural concepts in establishing the worker-client relationship, assessing health-seeking behaviors, identifying strengths and needs, and employing a cultural framework to ‘real’ practice issues. Participants explore critical components of culture through adopting a working definition of culture and diversity that goes beyond race and gender to include:

  • Non-verbal and para-verbal communications among cultural groups;
  • Cornerstones of culture; values (that binds us to each other) and codes of conduct (the behaviors that accentuate the differences);
  • Common errors people make when assessing culture, including stereotyping and ethnocentrism.
The workshop concludes with a working definition of and strategies to promote cultural competence.
