Day One – Getting Started

This session gives the new employee a strong foundation in what is needed initially to be successful early in the job and consists of Module One; Your Role as a Human Service Provider and Module Two; Establishing and Maintaining Your Professional Identity.

Topics include:

  • The profile of an effective Human Services Provider.
  • The multiple roles of the Human Service Provider.
  • Key strategies for managing your work and time on the job.
  • Everyday ethics; ethical situations most frequently encountered on the job.
  • Common mistakes new Human Services Providers make and how to overcome them.
  • Making the best use of supervision meetings and the feedback received.
  • Professional standards for the job; defining and maintaining a professional identify.
  • Who’s on the “treatment team” and the importance of promoting collaboration and access to resources.
  • Tips from the “pros” to develop self-confidence and self-trust in carrying out job responsibilities.

Day Two – Maximizing Your Impact

This session develops the communication and relational skills required in the job and addresses key elements for working effectively with consumers. This session consists of Module Three; Interpersonal Effectiveness: Your Key Tool and Module Four; Maximizing Your Clinical Impact

Topics include:

  • The basics of interpersonal communication; non-verbal communication, listening and managing conflict.
  • Key strategies for influencing others and gaining commitment.
  • Building collaboration at work; making treatment a team effort.
  • How to become a more effective problem solver.
  • Consumer relationship lifecycle - joining, managing professional boundaries and disengagement; what to do and what not to do.
  • Defining “client centered” treatment; examples of measurable and realistic outcomes.
  • Writing behaviorally specific treatment plans and progress notes.
  • Using limited resources creatively to work toward consumer independence.
  • Cultural competence; meeting the consumer where they are to help them move forward.

Day Three – Maximizing Your Performance

This session develops resiliency and sustainability in the job through improved self-management strategies and an appreciation of the business side of human services. The course concludes with a review of content and a final evaluation of progress. This session consists of Module Five; Preventing Burnout and Safeguarding Your Effectiveness, Module Six; Understanding the Business and Module Seven; Realizing Your Full Potential as a Human Services Provider.

Topics include:

  • Productivity pointers; managing time, workload and energy in order to get things done.
  • Defining burnout; identifying and minimizing your risk factors.
  • Strategies for managing stress and improving resiliency.
  • How to foster and utilize a performance support network to grow your skills.
  • Deep dive discussion - ethics, integrity and personal values.
  • Practical diversity; identifying and overcoming personal prejudices.
  • The business side of human services; the truth about funding.
  • Billable hours, treatment goals and the “heart” of service; how balancing “business” with “service” is essential to consumer interests.
  • Evaluating your progress and setting future learning and performance improvement goals.
